For 2021, junior players are those who were born on or after 1 January 2008, or who were born before 1 January 2008 but are still at primary school.
At the higher levels of hockey the sport is becoming increasingly technical which is, of course, part of its appeal. When one works with primary school players it is therefore extremely important to ensure that they are taught correct, modern techniques and skills – on an artificial surface – from day one. This is to ensure that they have a solid basis upon which they may one day develop into good senior players. With the wealth of coaching knowledge and experience at Nova Hockey Club, we are in an excellent position to ensure that our junior players develop optimally.
Nova Hockey Club's Junior Programme focuses on getting players to love and enjoy the sport and we achieve this by developing their individual skills and abilities. We believe that junior players should not be exposed to leagues or other winner-takes-all competitions but we will, if and when appropriate, arrange friendly matches against other clubs with similar programmes in order to give the players an opportunity to apply what they have learnt. The benefit of us not playing in a league is that youngsters who already play in league teams for their schools will be able to take part in our programme without infringing upon league rules.
In previous years training took place at the Pretoria West campus of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) on Fridays from 18:00 to 19:30. We are hoping to commence with the 2021 programme during February, but we have not yet received final Covid-19 directives from the SA Hockey Association, the Northerns Blues Hockey Association and the Tshwane University of Technology, all of which we hope to receive very soon. Once we have clarity on what is expected of us, we will make a decision regarding training days and times. Please check this website or our Facebook page regularly to remain up to date! (Please take note that club hockey and schools hockey are controlled by different government departments and that different rules regarding the resumption of training and matches may apply.)
NB: players need not join and/or commit before coming to their first session. We actually prefer that new players come and join in a session or two to see if they like it before joining – we just ask that you please let us know you're coming so that we can plan adequately.
